Located in Frederick County, Middletown is a timeless American town nestled in a picturesque valley west of Frederick, MD. The Middletown Valley stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and the South Mountains on the west. Reportedly, the suburban town gained its name from its location midway between the two mountain ranges.
The historic downtown is a central stop along a journey through our nation’s past. In the 1730s, the early settlers started to arrive in the valley. Among them was Michael Jesserong, who purchased 50 acres. He named his property Middletown. The town was officially founded in 1757, when Jesserong sold the first lots.
In 1806, Middletown’s Main Street spread west with the addition of the National Pike. In 1854, telegraph lines from Frederick and Hagerstown were routed through Middletown. Frederick Middletown Railway’s car 11 made its first run to Middletown in 1896. During the Civil War, both armies passed through the town to the battles of South Mountain and Antietam. Middletown opened its churches and homes to care for the wounded in the aftermath of those battles.
