Springfest is an annual event held in May. There is plenty to do for everyone. You can shop 70+, climb Whitetail’s Rock Wall, ride ponies, check out the local food court and buy some Amish donuts.
This year in September is the 38th annual Mercersburg Townfest. More than 8,000 people are expected to attend. The event is hosted by the Tuscarora Area Chamber of Commerce and features more than 120 crafters, artisans, culinary and local vendors, entertainment and a children’s fun section.
Mercersburg Borough was named after Hugh Mercer, a general in the American Revolutionary War. It was incorporated in 1831 with a population of 700. The Borough Hall sits on a lot that was the site of the first Town Jail and an early band shell.
James Buchanan, the only Pennsylvanian to be elected President of the United States, was born in a log cabin in Cove Gap northwest of Mercersburg. His family moved to nearby Mercersburg in 1797. The family’s home was later turned into the James Buchanan Hotel.
Mercersburg is home to the Mercersburg Academy, an independent college preparatory school that was founded in 1893. It has produced several Rhodes scholars, three Medal of Honor recipients, a Nobel laureate, two Academy Award winners, and 54 Olympians (including 12 gold medalists).
